Electrical Feed-Through Systems

COS offers a rugged electrical feed-through system for wellheads used in electrical submersible pumping applications. COS connector systems represent the utmost in reliability, simplicity, versatility, and convenience. They are adaptable to any application, onshore or offshore under any condition.

The COS electrical feed-through system incorporates design improvements that take advantage of the latest technological advancements in material science and engineering techniques.

Reliability

The lower connector is the key to the reliability of COS connector systems. Its unique design eliminates the need for a connection in the annulus, thereby eliminating a weak spot. Corrosion resistant stainless steel is used for the housing and flange of the connector, while the compound used to insulate the electrical conductors and provide the pressure seal inside the body of the connector is not susceptible to swelling or breakdown caused by wellbore fluids. The unique construction of the connector includes a Torlon face block to protect against pressure damage and high temperature.

Ease of Installation

The upper and lower connectors bolt to the top and bottom of the tubing hanger respectively. A connection port in the tubing hanger allows for mating of the two connectors. The pressure seal is maintained by primary and secondary O-rings applied to each connector body. No special tools are required for installation.

Versatility

Three different configurations are available to meet any need:

  • Two-piece 90-degree top entry
  • Three-piece 90-degree top entry
  • Pack-off style adapter system

A variety of pigtail cable types, sizes and lengths are available to meet any application or service.

Existing Wellheads and Top Entry Systems

While COS connector systems are designed to directly replace other types of electrical feed-through systems, they are also widely deployed when converting existing wellheads to electrical submersible pump applications. The COS universal top entry tubing head adapters are designed for this purpose.

Two-Piece 90-Degree Top Entry Electrical System

The two-piece, top entry system is used where a tubing adapter (bonnet) is not required. In this configuration, the tubing hanger remains exposed in the top of the tubing head spool. The system consists of:

  • 90-degree upper connector, and
  • Lower connector

The upper and lower connector are supplied with round cable pigtail, standard lengths of 25ft and 15ft respectively. Other lengths can be supplied on request.

The COS two-piece electrical feed-through system is designed to be used with the Type FA and Type SA universal tubing head adapters. To convert existing wellheads to the two-piece, top entry system, change out of the tubing hanger is required.

Type FA Universal Tubing Head Adapter

Please note when ordering:

  • Hanger allows for use of 3-1/2” tubing.
  • Upper flange comes complete with 4 lock-screws.
  • Standard adapters do not have side outlets. Side outlets are available in threaded or studded configuration. Specify size and type of side outlets when ordering.
  • Specify flat or round cable when ordering the lower connector.

Standard cable conductor size is AWG #4. Other sizes are available on request.

Type SA Universal Tubing Head Adapter

Please note when ordering:

  • The upper cap is 8-5/8” RD thread size, suitable for a BOP adapter.
  • Specify flat or round cable when ordering the lower connector.
  • Standard cable conductor size is AWG #4. Other sizes are available on request.

Three-Piece 90-Degree Top Entry Electrical System

The three-piece, top entry system is used where a tubing adapter (bonnet) is required. In addition to the upper and lower connectors, a transmission element is used to provide the required extra length to extend through the bonnet.

To convert existing wellheads to the three-piece, top entry system, change out the tubing hanger and bonnet are required. The COS three-piece electrical feed-through system is designed to be used with the top entry Type A universal tubing head adapter.

Type A Universal Tubing Head Adapter

Type A adapter spools are used in conjunction with three-piece electrical feed-through systems. When ordering, specify the adapter spool size and tubing adapter (bonnet) style, which can be supplied as either a threaded or flanged upper tubing connection.

Please note when ordering:

  • Allows for use of 3-1/2” tubing.
  • Upper flange comes complete with 4 lock-screws.
  • Standard adapters do not have side outlets. Side outlets are available in threaded or studded configuration. Specify size and type of side outlets when ordering.
  • Specify flat or round cable when ordering the lower connector.
  • Standard cable conductor size is AWG #4. Other sizes are available on request.
  • Unique bonnet configuration does not require an alignment slot for the tubing hanger.

SAPA Pack-Off Style Adapter System

For systems that do not require high pressure sealing of the annulus, the COS SAPA pack-off tubing head adapter is available. Typically used in water well applications, this system allows the ESP cable to pass through the wellhead without breaking the electrical connection.
